an Uk visitor who was lost for just two times in a remote part of northern Australia features described becoming rescued after composing an SOS when you look at the sand.

Geoff Keys, 63, lost his way in July after trying to find an isolated waterfall in Jardine National Park when you look at the state of Queensland.

His disappearance led to a huge search by helicopters alongside rescuers.

"My ensemble consisted of swimming trunks, a pair of swimming short pants over all of them, a T-shirt and a hat."

When he was unsuccessful, Mr Keys made a decision to end swimming and come back to their campsite.

"rather than turning round and cycling straight back upstream, I made a decision to take to the bush and cut across toward track. It was nearly dark. I had no shoes. What was I considering?" he composed.

He wandered around until 02:00 before bedding straight down for the evening. His friends had reported his absence and a helicopter search began the following day.

Mr Keys said he made a decision to swim downstream and over time got out to write the SOS message "HELP 2807" [the date, 28 July] with an arrow pointing downstream.

He previously to pay another evening in the open, and resume swimming again before rescuers noticed the message and finally winched him to protection.
